Many people were shocked when I wrote that humanity is a thin film over an ocean of stupidity, passions, instincts, and arrogance! The question even arises – how can a theologian think like that?
Well, in the history of Christian theology there have been optimistic anthropologies. These are primarily the Greek Fathers of the Church and Thomas Aquinas, according to whom man is good in himself and if human qualities are developed, one can achieve a perfect state of society and even move from a society of justice to a society of love.
But in the history of Christian theology, there have also been pessimistic anthropologies. These are primarily Augustine and Luther. Man in his current state is a slave to stupidity, passions, instincts, and arrogance! It is possible to free oneself from this state only through the efforts of faith and grace. And to maintain even the simplest society of justice, the power of love is necessary.
This position is realistic and allows us not to be surprised when we hear the most nightmarish nonsense from people who should be leaders, carrying the banner of freedom! You simply understand how little one can hope for general rationality in this world and how much horizontal efforts of solidarity and love can mean: when the world is flying into the abyss, it is they who save culture and civilization time and again!
Personally, as a theologian, I like to be a supporter of optimistic anthropology. But I understand that all the good qualities of humanity develop only by being afraid of its evil side. In the history of philosophy, Kant combined optimistic and pessimistic anthropology. Kant's idea is this: realistically looking at himself, a person sees in himself and others an abyss of stupidity, passions, instincts and arrogance. To curb this evil, a person relies on what he sees in himself as an idealist: the moral law of conscience tells everyone - treat others as if they were yourself or your child, the person most dear to you. This respect and love for others are necessary for the existence of a society of justice and, even more so, for the possibility of a society of love.
Today, the world's elected representatives do not treat the Ukrainians killed in Zaporizhzhia as if they were their own children - otherwise, no one in the world would believe that Putin was provoked into war.
Today, our elected representatives do not treat the soldiers in the trenches as if they were themselves or their children - because otherwise they would not vote for forgiveness of the undersupply of weapons to the front, would not forgive the supply of unclear mines. If there was a measure of justice - treat the situation as if your children are not protected now - I think they would demand the death penalty in general!
The most important thing to remember: we are imperfect.
But we can change the world for the better! And therefore we must do it!
